GB3GU Guernsey's 70cm Voice Repeater

After many years of service the original GB3GU repeater is about to be retired. The original GB3GU repeater was built around a Pye T461 transmitter and a Pye R460 receiver which were second hand when the Guernsey repeater group acquired them back in 1983. The repeater logic used back then was the GB3US Mk1 and has served us very well since first going on air back in march 1984.

Recently it became clear that time had taken its toll and we were spending more and more time trying to keep the old repeater on air due to various faults mostly capacitor failures.

In 2009 I started looking at options to upgrade the GB3GU repeater and after discussions with Robin GU4ASO of Radio and Electronic Services it was decided the best route would be to use some of the Icom PRM UHF mobiles as they were small compared to the Pye equipment, very reliable and easy to interface to the repeater logic.

We are very grateful to Robin GU4ASO of Radio and Electronic Services who very kindly donated a pair of Icom IC F2610 UHF transceivers and for his help and advice during the construction of the new GB3GU repeater.

The new GB3GU repeater now consists of two Icom IC F2610 UHF transceivers one on receive and the other on transmit. The logic has been changed for the new PIC based unit from C S Technology Ltd  which was very easy to interface and which has great support and backup from Chris. I can highly recommend this unit to any other groups looking to upgrade their repeater logic.

The new GB3GU repeater system is now undergoing final bench testing before being built into a small 19" rack cabinet. This cabinet will also house a small rack mounted UPS to help keep the repeater running in the event of a mains power failure.

Once this work is complete and all the final testing has been undertaken the repeater will be taken to the repeater site and swopped for the old GB3GU repeater.

This new GB3GU repeater should give many years of trouble free service.

If their are any features that you would like to see added i.e. Echolink  let me know and we will see what can be done.

As is the case with all radio amateur situations, reception may be obtained by the use of improved gain and favourable locations.
